Background
Chickasaw County was established on February 9, 1836, and was named for the Chickasaw Indian Tribe that occupied the northern part of Mississippi. The county, when organized was much larger than it is now, included most of what is now Calhoun County, the northern part of Clay County and the extreme northeastern part of Webster County. Chickasaw County contained 1,077 square miles of territory and now composes 507 square miles.

The county seat was organized in 1837 and named Houston in honor of Sam Houston, a friend of Joel Pinson. Pinson donated the land for the town on condition that it be named after his childhood friend. In 1877, the legislature enacted a law dividing the county into two judicial districts with Houston as First and Okolona as Second.

Overview
Chickasaw County was settled by two Gilliam families:
  • LIttleberry Gilliam the son of John Gilliam of Buckingham County, VA and Catherine Routon, his wife, married on 3 May 1827 in Franklin County, AL Elizabeth Ann Tompkins. Littleberry married secondly the widow Mary Ann Dennis on 17 Mar 1864 in Pontotoc County, MS. Thirty-three voters selected a Board of Police made up of Littlebury Gilliam, Thomas Gates, Thomas D. Wooldridge, Benjamin Bugg and Asa H. Braddock, in an election held April 23, 1836. Littleberry was the founder of Prairie Mount and was also a former State Senator (1843) as well as the largest landowner in the county by the time the Civil War started. It is said that Littleberry Gilliam was killed in Chickasaw County in October of 1864. Federal deserters, or “bummers” beat and tortured Littleberry to get to his gold which was hidden. Littleberry escaped his captors and hid under the floor boards of his barn. The bummers caught up with him, and set fire to the barn thus burning Littleberry alive.
  • Jesse Gilliam, born about 1797, in North Carolina. Jesse married Catherine “Kitty” Monasco on 25 Mar 1825 in Greene County, AL.

Prairie Mount
The town of Prairie Mount was situated on the edge of the prairie in the northeastern part of Chickasaw County.  It was on the public road leading from Okolona to Pontotoc, and about five miles north of the former place.  Prairie Mount was founded by Littleberry Gilliam, an enterprising farmer, who removed from Franklin County, Ala., and settled there about 1836.  He became one of the members of the first board of police of Chickasaw County and aided in its organization.  The little village was named by him in 1836.  His residence was opened to the public as a wayside inn for the accommodation of travelers seeking land investments from all that part of the Tombigbee River country south of Pontotoc.  There was soon established two small dry goods stores, a grog shop, a blacksmith, and a wagon repair shop, but the place was not incorporated until 1852.  About the time of the permanent location of the survey of the Mobile and Ohio railroad, the beginning of the present town of Okolona was made by the erection of one or two farm residences and a saloon.  It soon began to grow into a trade center for that part of the county which had hitherto contributed to the growth of Prairie Mount.  At the close of the War between the States Prairie Mount became extinct.  The site of this once prosperous town is now part of a farm.
