Background
Botetourt County was named for Norborne Berkeley, baron de Botetourt, the royal governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770.  It was formed from Augusta County in 1769, and part of Rockbridge County was added in 1785.  Its area is 549 square miles, and the county seat is Fincastle.

Overview
Some of descendants of William GILLIAM and Mary Jarratt settled, for a time, in Botetourt County including, son, Thomas GILLIAM in the 1780’s. Later grandson of William and Mary, John P. GILLIAM settled in Botetourt. (John P. GILLIAM is the son of John GILLIAM and Mary Tooley).

This indenture made this 10th day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven between Thomas Newell and Nancy his wife of the one part & John P. GILLIAM of the other part all of the county of Botetourt and state of Virginia witnesseth that the said Thomas Newell and Nancy his wife for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars, lawful money of the United States to them in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged do bargain, and sell unto the said John P. GILLIAM & his heirs one certain tract of land known by the name of the Cherry Tree Orchard lying and being in the county aforesaid on Purgatory Mountain adjoining the land of Mayberry Weaver & Andrew Amix [?] deed is bounded as follows viz.
Beginning at two hickory and a Chestnut thence with the lines of the same south 20 west seventy four pole to a white oak and hickory old corner thence west one hundred and twenty pole up the mountain thence north 31 east one hundred and forty poles to three red oaks by the head of a spring a small branch thence south 55 east ninety two poles along the mountain to the beginning containing fifty acres more or less
To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with all its appurtenances thereunto belonging to the said John P. GILLIAM and his heirs to the sole use and behoof of him the said John P. GILLIAM and his heirs forever and they the said Thomas Newell and his wife for ____and their heirs doth covenant with the said John P. GILLIAM & his heirs the said tract or parcel of land with all its appurtenances unto the said John P. GILLIAM & his heirs they the said Thomas Newell and Nancy his wife and their heirs will forever warrant ___ defend the same by these presents
