Overview
This map from William Dollarhide’s book American Migration Routes, 1735-1815, published by Heritage Quest shows the main overland routes of Virginia and North Carolina.

The Gilliams of central Virginia generally followed the Fall Line Road into North and South Carolina whereas those of Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley followed the Great Valley Road into Western Carolina and beyond.
